Learn More About Opioid Addiction Treatment

Learn more about opioid addiction treatment at Azure Acres Treatment Center in Santa Rosa, CA

Opioids are a class of drugs that are derived from the opium poppy plant. Physicians often use opioid drugs such as morphine, Vicodin, and fentanyl for their painkilling properties. However, all opioids, including both prescription medications and illegal opioids like heroin and opium, have the potential to be abused. When these drugs are abused, they produce feelings of relaxation and euphoria, and with repeated use, a person may develop an opioid use disorder. Because the effects of this disorder are so powerful, it is often almost impossible for a person to overcome an opioid use disorder without professional help.

At Azure Acres Treatment Center, we understand how difficult it can be to overcome an opioid use disorder. Fortunately, we have more than 60 years of experience helping people overcome many different kinds of substance use disorders. With our decades of experience, compassionate treatment team, and comprehensive care, it is possible to overcome the effects of opioid addiction and restore your ability to live a full and fulfilling life.

How to Help a Loved One

Helping a loved one get treatment for opioid addiction

While it may feel as though there is nothing you can do to help your loved one when he or she is struggling with an opioid use disorder, the steps below may help encourage him or her on the path to recovery:

  • Learn all that you can about your loved one’s drug of choice, including the signs and symptoms of intoxication and overdose.
  • Research opioid addiction treatment and rehabilitation options. Each treatment center has a slightly different philosophy of treatment and rehab approach, so learn about different treatment centers and find a few that may be a good fit for your loved one.
  • Continue communicating with your loved one. While his or her opioid use disorder has likely caused strain in your relationship, it is important to keep open lines of communication. Inform your loved one that you are aware of his or her struggle with opioids, and do so in a way that is supportive, non-confrontational, and nonjudgmental.
  • When your loved one is ready to enter treatment for their opioid addiction, discuss the list of treatment centers that you found with him or her. Also, assist him or her with logistical issues such as scheduling appointments with treatment center staff. You may also be supportive of your loved one by letting him or her know that you are available to accompany him or her to those appointments.
  • During this entire process, continue taking care of yourself. Eat healthy, get enough sleep, and exercise regularly. In addition, make time for hobbies and other activities that rejuvenate you. Furthermore, remember that you do not have to do this alone; enlist the support of your close family and friends to help during difficult time.

Why Consider Treatment

Why consider treatment for opioid addiction at Azure Acres Treatment Center in Santa Rosa, CA

Although certain opioids have the potential to help when used according to physician recommendations, all opioids can be dangerous if abused. Opioid use disorder can place immense strain on relationships and stress them to the breaking point. A person struggling with this disorder may experience separation, estrangement, divorce, loss of child custody, and social isolation. In addition, opioid abuse hinders a person’s ability to perform well at work, possibly resulting in demotion, job loss, and financial strain. Opioid abuse also harms a person’s body, potentially causing organ damage, memory issues, and other cognitive symptoms. Depending on how a person uses his or her opioid of choice, he or she may also be at increased risk of contracting a sexually transmitted infection such as HIV or hepatitis C through the use of shared needles. Perhaps the most severe consequence of opioid abuse, however, is the ever-present threat of a fatal overdose. Fortunately, with the help of a dedicated treatment team at a comprehensive substance abuse treatment center, it is possible to minimize these negative consequences or even avoid them altogether.

Caring and dedicated staff members are there for residents each step of the way and lend a helping hand or an ear to listen whenever residents need it. The following types of treatment are those featured at Azure Acres and can be included into a resident’s personalized treatment plan:

Detox services: Residents who come to our treatment and rehabilitation center physically dependent on a substance, such as opioids, may require detox services at the start of their care. When this is the case, we assist the men and women who come to Azure Acres by providing them with the treatment they need to make this process as comfortable as possible. If they are able to during detox, or once residents have finished detox services, they are welcome to participate in the programming offered in our residential program.

Individual therapy: As a means of providing our residents with the attention they deserve, individual therapy sessions are incorporated into each resident’s personalized treatment plan. At least one time each week, residents can meet with their assigned case manager to discuss their goals for recovering from an addiction to opioids, process their experiences in treatment, and work through any emotions that they are having. Additionally, residents are able to meet with case managers for individual support on a daily basis if they require it.

Family Program: At Azure Acres, we believe family involvement is crucial when a person is working towards recovering from opioids, and we are proud to offer an invaluable family program. This program is offered 2 consecutive Saturdays each month and features education opportunities that inform loved ones about addiction and chemical dependency, the recovery process, and recovering from codependency. Process groups are also available so that family members and friends can share their stories, process their feelings, and speak in a healthy but candid manner about their experiences with their loved one.

Group therapy: Relapse prevention groups, psychoeducation groups, and 12-Step groups are among the types of group therapy opportunities offered at Azure Acres. We believe that residents are able to benefit from the support of others who have endured similar challenges with regards to battling addictions to drugs such as opioids, and we are pleased to provide forums in which they can offer and receive that support. Residents at Azure Acres participate in groups three times per day and learn about the following topics while in our care:

  • Forgiveness
  • Honesty
  • Anger
  • Denial
  • Anxiety
  • Codependency
  • Acceptance
  • Continuing care planning
