Located in Sonoma County, California, and housed in a historic lodge that was built in 1906, Azure Acres Treatment Center has been providing life-changing drug and alcohol addiction treatment since 1959. Today, Azure Acres provides several levels of care for adult men and women, ages 18 and older, who have been struggling with substance abuse and chemical dependency. Azure Acres also offers treatment programs for adults with a primary diagnosis of substance use disorders who are also experiencing certain co-occurring mental health disorders.
Befitting a program that has been offering treatment for more than five decades, Azure Acres employs time-tested therapeutics and embraces the traditions and principles of the 12-Step recovery model. Through the years, we have also made a practice of incorporating research-based and evidence-supported advancements in treatment techniques. At Azure Acres, treatment is a dynamic experience that blends a half-century of experience and success with an ongoing commitment to continued self-improvement. The result is a truly unique and highly successful treatment opportunity.
Depending upon an individual’s specific needs, his or her experience at Azure Acres, located near Santa Rosa, California, may feature the following elements:
Detoxification: The first step in overcoming chemical dependency is ridding one’s body of the substance or substances that one has been abusing. Depending upon the nature and severity of an individual’s addiction, it may be extremely difficult to accomplish this without professional help. At Azure Acres, individuals can complete the withdrawal process under the close supervision of addiction experts. When the detox process is complete, the individual can transition directly into residential treatment.
Residential Treatment: Residential treatment can be an essential step on the path of lifelong recovery. While in residence at Azure Acres, recovering individuals will participate in individual therapy, group therapy, family education sessions, and a variety of experiential therapies, including qigong, role-playing, and expressive arts. During this phase of treatment, Azure Acres residents will also learn the principles and practices of the 12-Step recovery model, and will begin to progress through the early steps. In addition to the 12-Step model, residential treatment at Azure Acres is guided by a variety of therapeutic modalities, including crisis intervention, psychoeducation, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), client-centered therapy, somatic therapy, and bibliotherapy. Typical length of stay in residential treatment at Azure Acres is about 30 days, though the actual time that a person remains in treatment with us will be determined by his or her specific strengths, needs, and progress.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): Individuals who have completed residential treatment either with us or at another program, and who can benefit from a step-down level of care prior to returning home, may be best served by participating in an intensive outpatient program, or IOP. Azure Acres provides IOP at two northern California locations, one in Sacramento and one in Santa Rosa. Both locations offer four three-hour treatment sessions each week for a total of 12 weekly hours of IOP services. During IOP, individuals will participate in individual therapy, group therapy, and family education sessions. The typical length of stay in IOP with us is six weeks.
From detox through IOP, the goal of Azure Acres Treatment Center is to provide a full continuum of care that allows us to meet individuals where they are, and provide them with the services and support that they need to achieve their individual treatment goals. Specialized Groups at Azure Acres near Santa Rosa, CA
At Azure Acres Treatment Center, we are continuously introducing new groups and activities that make recovery relatable and fun. The following are some of the specialized groups we offer at our Sonoma County treatment center:
Every night at 10 p.m., residents gather to discuss their day and engage in a tradition that has existed since 1980: We bring the telephone into the room and invite recent Azure Acres graduates to call in so that everyone in the house can wish them a good night.
A specialist leads a Qigong session for our clients once a week to strengthen the connection between mind, body and spirit. Qigong is a health practice that has its roots in ancient China. It uses slow, graceful movements, mental concentration and relaxed breathing to help balance the body’s energy.
Humor in Treatment
Once a month, clients are treated to a “humor in treatment” group with recovery comedian Mark Lundholm, who is motivational in his realism and a living example of the possibilities recovery brings. A self-professed pessimist, Mark takes a look back at the missed opportunities and flawed thinking that his drug addiction caused and encourages clients to share their stories.
In this group, Mark shares words of wisdom and memorable sayings that address the themes of self-centeredness, relationships, acceptance, surrender, spirituality and early signs of relapse. He has a true gift for opening people’s hearts by inviting clients to talk candidly about some of the surprising and funny characteristics that many addicts share and engage in a no-holds-barred discussion about the realities and gifts of recovery.
Every session is unique and guaranteed to be thought-provoking, funny and healing all at once. Clients are joined by staff, alumni and other clinical professionals.
Spirituality is critical to recovery, but it isn’t always what you’d expect. While we welcome prayer, spirituality is also about fighting self-centeredness with service to others and accepting accountability for our decisions and behaviors.
Our Spiritual Director meets with clients each month to explore the concept of spirituality in ways they can see, feel and touch. Trained at Mercy Center, one of the oldest and most reputable spiritual direction programs in the U.S., with a private practice and 26 years in 12-Step recovery herself, our Spiritual Director leads an eight-part series on spirituality in addiction recovery. Each session focuses on a particular theme, such as surrender, acceptance, commitment, honesty and faith.
